Before doing cleanup make sure you have a good backup of host machine along with virtual machines or you can take fresh backup for a safer side. I don’t think so post running above mentioned command you need to run cleanup and DISM will clear up a good amount of space. Also, see if you have configured any volume shadow copy if yes then delete them all.

It is a R2 virtual machine so I’ll kick off a checkpoint before I run those dism commands just on case! Once they are ran will I be able to run disk clean-up in the usual way or is this the new way to clean-up windows update in server R2? Thanks for that Akshay!

I got a rather worrying error when I ran the dism. Any ideas what is going on here and how do I sort that corruption problem before I proceed with doing the clean-up? It has generated a 17 MB log file so too big to paste in here but let me know if you need any extracts from it to help you help me get to the bottom of this problem. Any further ideas on helping me to be able to reduce the size of these folders would be greatly appreciated! Yes I’ve got that disk clean-up tool installed but my problem is even if I run disk cleanup as admin it doesn’t give me the option to cleanup the Windows Update files. Disk cleanup doesn’t appear to be able to cleanup the windows update files for some reason and that is what I need help with allowing me to do that.

Based on my knowledge, the Windows Update Cleanup option is available only when the Disk Cleanup wizard detects Windows updates that you do not need on the computer. It’s designed by default.
