If that\’s the case, I would strongly suggest that you or someone you know who has a high speed connection use the Media Creation Tool to create either a bootable USB stick or a DVD that you can use to do your upgrade.

When you run the tool after you download it you have the option to upgrade the machine it\’s running on or to create media for another PC, and you would want to do the latter. You need to make sure that you choose the correct version of Windows 10, Home or Pro, and the correct bit-size 32 or 64 for the machine you intend to upgrade.

Be aware that the media takes several hours to upgrade even on reasonably high speed DSL. It\’s just short of 5GB in size for Win10 Home bit, at least if memory serves, so it\’s not going to be fast pretty much anywhere or anywhere that I ever have internet access.

You are not \”obligated\” to upgrade to Windows 10, so if your current OS is working fine, then you do not need to upgrade. The Windows 10 upgrade should leave any personal data files untouched, but programs are another question entirely.

This upgrade can and does \”archive\” they get placed in the Windows. The catch here is that some programs that are compatible get swept up because their makers did not make the slight tweaks necessary such that Windows 10 would recognize them as compatible.

My general statement is that you can expect all of your user data to remain intact and probably most, but not all, of your programs. I recommend that people reinstall whatever might get swept into Windows. If you are upgrading a machine that has Windows 7 or Windows 8 on it the process of licensing Windows 10 is a part of the process. And I want to be abundantly clear that by \”upgrading a machine\” that you will be using the \”Upgrade this PC Now\” option. This is different than installing Windows 10 \”from scratch\” to change the OS on the machine. Although that is an OS upgrade it does not use the Windows Upgrade process.

If you are trying to do a \”from scratch\” install you will need a license key, and the latest version from the Media Creation Tool allows you to use any valid Windows 7 or Windows 8 license key.

There is one proviso, though, if the Win7 or Win8 license key is from the OEM version of Windows installed on a given machine it will work only on the machine that had this license key \”from birth.

If you are using Windows 7 without any \”Service Packs\”, then you should upgrade to Windows 7 SP1 first, before you upgrade to Windows And if you are using Windows 8 not 8. This should be considered standard practice before doing any sort of major update or upgrade on an operating system and it can\’t be emphasized, or repeated, enough. Failing to do so can lead to a complete catastrophe if the upgrade were to fail for any reason, and they occasionally do.

Windows 8 was a tectonic shift in the user interface overall, and any time you go from something where everything is almost as automatic as breathing for you to something almost entirely new or even substantially new the pain of a learning curve is involved. Whether that pain is worth it is something only you can determine for yourself. The transition from Win8 to Win10 is substantially easier and I really like Win10 much better than Win8.
