Hope this will help. Please see KB Acronis True Image: how to clone a disk – and the step by step guide given there. Note: the first section of the above KB document directs laptop users to KB How to clone a laptop hard drive – and has the following paragraph:.

It is recommended to put the new drive in the laptop first, and connect the old drive via USB. Otherwise you will may not be able to boot from the new cloned drive , as Acronis True Image will apply a bootability fix to the new disk and adjust the boot settings of the target drive to boot from USB. If the new disk is inside the laptop, the boot settings will be automatically adjusted to boot from internal disk.

As such, hard disk bays cannot be used for target disks. For example, if you have a target hard disk i. I would recommend to write it with big capital letters on the beginning of the videos and other information sources!!!! Second most important thing is to recommend creation of the rescue disc for eventual windows restore. Sorry to read of your problems after cloning but will need more information to better understand what the actual issue here is?

What version of Acronis software did you use? Was it ATI as per this forum? Unfortunately, cloning has been a potential high risk activity for a very long time! On the crucial web is a set of 4 videos how to provide the upgrade and link to Acronis download. Basically: Connecting ssd via usb, make a clone, turn the pc off and replace the old hdd.

My thought was: Cloning is just a copy of the original hdd sector by sector or it should be. Respective it was so in old days as if I remember;-! Microsoft is a big teacher!!! So I watched the videos one more time. It took about two hours to finish and everything seemed to be ok. So I started to google possibilities to fix it and found the topic which says that I should have connected the ssd to USB adapter to create the clone and then to swap them.

Which is completely opposite to the videos from crucial and Sabrent. Tomorrow I have possibility to create the win 10 rescue iso and I would like to try to repair the MBR or what and try to boot or save at least the data on the hdd and also try to make new install of W10 on the ssd and make the transition somehow. So I suppose it is OK and not damaged. So I installed there a new win10 to be sure, that it will work. Anyway, I would like to continue and give a try to repair the booting problems on the hdd and then try to clone the hdd again on the ssd and get my setup as it was.

Files from the old HDD should still be accessible but you may need to \’take ownership\’ of those files given they were created by a different user account. Should I return the hdd back and try from there? The ssd is ok, the boot in bios should be also ok now, so it may be possible to start again.

Or should I get some tool partition manager etc to make it bootable? There is 70 GB free space and probably also some recovery partition on the hdd. Could be possible to create a new bootable partition there without destroying the data? Or should I forget about it and go for the reinstalled version and try to get the data? Should I ask the Microsoft support for help? If you have done a clean install of Windows on the new SSD and that is working, then you should just be able to connect the HDD externally and after you have changed the ownership of your files on the HDD, you can copy them across to the new SSD.

See webpage: How to Take Ownership of a Folder in Windows 10 Using File Explorer – make sure you \” replace owner on subcontainers and objects\” as shown in the screen shots for this article. Off course my intention was to install a new ssd into my old notebook and transfer my user environment and data with as little energy as possible and the clone supposed to be the way. When happened, that the cloning way went wrong, the new installation was for me the only available option.

I do not employ encryption or any of the other \’gotchas\’ that would cause cloning failure. Not the target, which is also unbootable, the original boot drive I created fresh and tested. I read this thread in detail, and note the litany of caveats. One I find particularly telling is duplication of drive signature. I have a laptop and desktop in my office apart from the one that failed disk clone, and they both have two concurrently connected volumes, each bootable, that gives me a safety net should I need it, and I have.

One would think Acronis could overcome this as have other vendors. I must say, the disk clone feature takes the cake for the most rotten easter egg I\’ve ever encountered in a software product. This feature was not available when this topic was originally written. There are clear warnings in the ATI user guides across most recent versions of the product telling users to make a full backup before using cloning – that still applies to the version.

Personally, I have never had any issues when using cloning but I have dealt with many users who have come to these forums after getting it wrong for a wide variety of reasons , many of whom have bought a new HDD or SSD which came with an OEM copy of ATI where the simple guide just suggested jumping in at the deep end! Please see webpage: What Is a Disk Signature? Like Steve I have never had problems with cloning, however, if things go wrong they can go very wrong.

Steve is correct to warn about problems with duplicate disk signatures. I have not had that problem with cloning but have when breaking up raid 1 configuration – both disks same signature.

However, if the source disk has OS on it a boot is required. However, I just did this with Update 3 and the system did not reboot. I got a message about there being OS on the disk and did I want to overwrite and the cloning worked without issue. Ian, thanks for sharing that change – I haven\’t tried doing a live clone recently since installing the Update 3 build, but good to know how things are being handled. Well I came across this forum too late I am in the middle of cloning my C drive as I write this.

I read that it is better to let the cloning op to continue rather then cancel it. What I did wrong was when I had a failed to read from a sector I clicked ignore all and the cloning process continues.

I know now I should have run chkdsk before cloning but now I need to know if I run chkdsk on the the cloned drive will these bad sectors be fixed As you are in the middle of cloning, then you need to wait for that to finish before doing anything else.

Once the clone is finished, then disconnect the new drive and set it aside, then do the following:. In reply to DeWayne, welcome to these… by Steve Smith. Hi Steve thanks for the quick responce.

I do have a full disk and partitions backup done plus have a recent Acronis cloud backup. The old C drive has been booting and working ok but when I ran a Crystal app the other day it came up with a caution warning and also said it had hours on it!

I home built this rig a number of years ago so it is old like me! One thing that I noticed is the time remaining in the clone process went from 2 hours to 8 hours and seems stuck there. Is this normal? I have never cloned a drive before so all this new to me The cloning process finished and I took the old drive out and booted with new cloned drive every thing worked great.

The PC is much more responsive and all files are intact. In reply to Thanks for by Steve Smith. Is there any way to get the drive to be recognized and used again? Authored on. Order Asc Desc. Date within – Any – 1 day 3 days 1 week 2 weeks 1 month 2 months 6 months 1 year. Thread solved.

View Solution. Steve Smith. Posts: Comments: DO NOT attempt to clone to a drive which has existing data that you wish to keep. Cloning duplicates the drive signature which will confuse Windows at best and could potentially cause both drives to be corrupted.

It is Highly Recommended to check both the Source and Target drives for any errors before attempting to clone – any bad sectors can cause the clone to fail. Also try to avoid using front USB ports when cloning where possible. You could lose your system if you do so! Acronis Rescue Media knows nothing of Encryption and cannot backup encrypted data nor restore a backup to an encrypted disk drive. This is a Safer approach as it does not require that any changes be made to the Windows Boot Loader configuration files, which starting a clone from within Windows makes in order to create the Linux Kernel recovery environment.

Acronis Backup and Restore is Highly Recommended as a complete alternative to using Cloning – this is safer for a number of reasons: A Backup can be used multiple times as needed – Cloning is a one-shot at success!

Backup and Restore is more flexible in what types of drives can be used, i. KB documents: Acronis True Image: Cloning Disks and Difference between Backup and Disk Clone contain very important information on these subjects and should be read before embarking on these actions.

KB document: Acronis True Image: Compatibility with BitLocker deals with the topic of encryption and is equally valid for any other encryption product besides BitLocker.

Karin Christensen. Posts: 2. Comments: 7. Karin, The MVP\’s are not recommending you clone starting from Windows because there are additional risks that may leave your system in an unbootable state – depending on things like availability of hardware drivers in the Acronis recovery environment, how the bios is configured if secureboot is enabled chances are it will fail to load Acronis, but if Acronis was allowed to modify the disk before restarting, and can\’t set it back because it failed to load – that can be a problem.

The process is exactly the same, but you start with your recovery media to be on the safe side. Posts: 0. Comments: 5. So, Steve, Here I am at 4am. It\’s been a long night and I am part way through a disk clone using TI This is my first time here and so I have not read this post before now!

My questions are. This is the first time I have needed its abilities. Hope you can help with some advice. Cheers Michael. Michael, welcome to these user forums.

At least I have a backup of all the folders and files from the \’user\’ downwards from a week ago. I hate technology.

The more you rely on it, the more unreliable it becomes. Thanks for all your helpful comments Michaelfromoz. Michael, sorry to hear that the original drive failed completely. Ian and Steve, I have finished. Now, on to a backup strategy using Acronis, seeing as I have paid for it Thanks both, once again for your input.

UNABLE TO CLONE DISK | Acronis Forum – Also read in:

Hello Community, I was hoping I could get some help with this problem. I have a win10 dell optiplex computer and it has uses the uefi boot manager if thats the correct terminology. I have acronis true imageand i want to make an image file of the hdd eg in case the hdd fails i will have something to restore to. So, I have done this successfully with on other computers with MBR drives, but this is the first computer i have that has uefi.

I went through the same steps i used with the mbr disks to make the image file eg i booted off an acronis usb that i made with the acronis programand it said it made the image file successfully. Then when i connected the a new hdd to test the image filei booted to an acronis usb, and i ran the add new disk option choosing the initialize as GPT option.

Then i acronis true image 2017 clone disk operation failed free download partitions on the new disk that matched what was on the disk i am trying to \”backup\”. The partitions were EFI System which was in fat32Recovery Partition which was in ntfsand the windows partition which was ntfs. I seemed to be able to assign the right source and destination partitions normally eg the acronis screens responded normallybut only about a minute if that after I clicked \”proceed\” to write to the new hdd, i get the error \”recover operation failed\”.

I dont even know were to start to figure out exactly what failed. It would be great to be able to recover successfully. Can anyone help? Before looking for more esoteric causes, one thing should be checked.

I am using a dell optiplexand i am booting off of a usb acronis drive an 8 GB usb thumb drive i made with the acronis true image program i bought and installed on a windows machine. With the optiplex, i press F12 at startup, and i get several boot options in a list. Also, this seemed to be the default option, and i accepted it.

I have found this works with MBR drives, but could it be causing a problem with the uefi gpt drive? Michael, what is the size of the source disk drive used to create the backup image you are trying to restore here? When doing any disk recovery there is no need to create any partitions as these will be wiped by Acronis anyway! Finally, always check the Log for the restore operation before leaving the rescue media environment and if needed, use the right-click option to save a copy of the log to your USB stick, so that it can be viewed later!

The log will show any errors or reasons for a failure. Hello Steve, Thank you for helping! I need to know how to re-image and restore gpt drives big time. The hdd has acronis true image 2017 clone disk operation failed free download on it, it is a 2 TB acronis true image 2017 clone disk operation failed free download hdd, and it has The hdd i am using for the destination hdd when i try to restore the image file of the source drive is also a sata drive, and it is only GB.

Note, i have 4 of these, i bought them all new for testing stuff like this, and i have tried 2 of them eg in case one was failingbut i got the same error. Does it boot correctly into Windows 10 and show no errors etc? UEFI Secure Boot should not matter whether it is turned on or turned off for the purposes involved here in creating a backup and restoring it acronis true image 2017 clone disk operation failed free download another drive. Macrium Reflect offer a free version that would be suitable – you would need to make a copy of their rescue media to use for the restore.

Thank you again very much for your help! Michael, regarding checking the 2TB HDD, chances are that the HDD has been repurposed as there is very little acronis true image 2017 clone disk operation failed free download of it being refurbished and acronis true image 2017 clone disk operation failed free download new drives can читать with bad sectors or issues. You could try checking on the HDD drive makers support web site using the model and serial number to logic pro x 8gb free download if it is still under warranty if it was a new drive installed in the PC.

Disk management showing the drive as healthy is no guarantee that there are no faults with the drive such as bad sectors – only running diagnostic tools can determine this! Dedicated diagnostic utilities from the disk manufacturers take the longest time to complete the checks, but provide the most accurate methods of checking whether the disk is good or needs replacement:.

If Windows Disk Management does not allow using the Shrink option, then there are other tools that can and will do this for you. Download a copy of the free MiniTool Partition Wizard softwareinstall this in Windows, then use this to resize your partitions. Click on acronis true image 2017 clone disk operation failed free download Apply button to make the changes when done. Note: this will require a Windows restart to complete the changes.

Using a different backup application is a good method of proving if any issues are being caused by Acronis or arise from the hardware involved. I have both Acronis and Macrium applications installed on most of my PC\’s and typically acronis true image 2017 clone disk operation failed free download both of these from time to time, even though Acronis is my normal default tool.

You mention about wanting to use the PC with Hyper-V for testing virtual machines, which is something I have used quite a lot recently! One final comment, it would be worth testing this Dell PC by installing one of your GB drives and doing a clean install of Windows 10 to this. Provided the PC has previously been activated for Windows 10, then doing a clean install will be smooth and with no activation issues. Ideally, it is best to activate Windows on acronis true image 2017 clone disk operation failed free download PC with a Microsoft Account email address although it works fine with the hardware signature.

I am very scared I understand the importance of discovering and learning and trying new things, but let me ask this: Would using a larger destination drive \”test\” the same thing that resizing the source partitions would test? If so, would getting a 2 TB drive to re-test with accomplish the same thing? If so, I\’d like to try that 1st so i change as few things as possible on the читать полностью drive. Also, thank you for answering взято отсюда the other questions, and reminding me that trying other programs that do the same thing eg acronis and macrium is an essential troubleshooting step.

And thank you, too, for the страница into running vms, that is my next goal eg to setup a test lab.

Just going on those sizes alone suggests that there is very little installed on acronis true image 2017 clone disk operation failed free download drive other than Windows 10 and maybe some basic applications! Personally, if the 2TB drive only has a basic, vanilla install of Windows 10, then I would repeat my earlier suggestion to remove the drive, replace it by a GB SSD then do a new clean install of Windows 10 using the Windows installation media that can be downloaded from Microsoft easily.

Note: for Hyper-V you should be using Windows 10 Pro unless you are going to use a registry hack see webpage here to get it working on a Home edition of Windows. If you нажмите чтобы прочитать больше the top \’Disk\’ option when recovering a backup image, then ATI will copy back all that is needed.

Hello Steve, -I see, Michael, sorry but your latest findings only tend to confirm that there is a real issue with the original source 2TB HDD and I can only repeat my earlier recommendation repeated below :. One reason why I читать полностью not recommend changing the BIOS to legacy is that you are taking a backward step, restricting the number and size of partitions you can have, and preventing any future upgrade to Windows 11 which does not support legacy BIOS mode.

Now that I\’ve answered the question of \”did it need a bigger destination hdd\”, I am going to do the things you suggested to see if there are any problems with the original hdd. I am running the onboard dell diagnostics on the hdd with the thorough option selected, and it looks like it will take about 6 hours. Also, i will also try to re-install windows on a different hdd and see if that works, and then see if it lets me run acronis.

I will do this with the uefi bios, but regarding using the legacy bios on all 4 of the pcs i have for this test lab thing im trying to setup, it may seem odd, but that will guarantee these win10 pcs will not accidentally update to windows Then i want to learn more about UEFI with the pcs that are currently in this test lab and will be freed up when I get these other 4 pcs going and then maybe appy it to the test lab thing once i know more Also, you\’re suggestion of resizing the partitions seems very logical, and i am going to get brave and try that I will need a few days to do these things, but I am going to do them asap, and i will update this post перейти. Michael, the Seagate diagnostic tools are the best for testing that make of drive – more so than the generic Dell tools.

Seatools can normally be run as a stand-alone tool – been a little time since I needed it but I have run it from читать полностью a floppy disc or CD before though that may be more than a few years ago! It works essentially like rescue media allowing a PC to be booted from the optical media and tools run offline. Michael, one point ref ATI is that it is the final version from Acronis with a perpetual license after which all products are now annual subscription.

If buying a copy of ATI then ensure it is the \’Standard\’ version if you want the perpetual license – all other editions are subscription. Michael, thanks for all the answers to previous questions but sorry some more to ask of you! There are several other options that you could try for this issue: You could try using Windows Disk Management to \’Shrink\’ the size of the Windows OS C: partition on the 2TB original disk, so see how small it can be made, i.

Hello Steve, I am very scared I can re-use the 2 TB for other things, too, after using it for this test.
