Multi-factor authentication MFA adds a second level of security when you log in to Xero. It combines something you know your email address and password with something you have an authenticator app on your smartphone or tablet. This second layer of security is designed to stop anyone else accessing your Xero account, even if they know your password.

You should set up MFA for your own user account using your Xero login details. You should never share passwords with others. We recommend you set up MFA to protect your Xero account. When you log in to Xero, you enter your email address and password. Xero then prompts you to authenticate using either push notifications or a code generated by an authenticator app. Once you\’ve set up MFA, you\’ll get the option to skip authenticating your login for up to 30 days whenever you login.

You can select the Trust your device checkbox to skip authenticating. You choose and install an authenticator app when you set up MFA. If you install Xero Verify you can use push notifications, which are quicker and easier than using codes. With push notifications, a message pops up on your smartphone or tablet. Xero Verify only sends notifications when you\’re logging in to Xero.

It won\’t send notifications at other times. The codes generated by authenticator apps are continually updated. The app has 2 functions, to send you push notifications as well as generate 6 digit codes in case you are not in a wifi enabled area. If you are receiving push notifications which is the fastest way to login to Xero , then the app is working as expected.

The sole purpose of the app is to verify you as a legitimate user of Xero and provide access to your account. She would need my email too? This is the most useless thing no one wanted. Still trying to figure out how to log her in remotely with no luck so far.

Why even give the option to turn this off? When you turn it off, the next time you log in, it just forces you to set it up again before you can do anything within the program?!

So as every other reviewer has mentioned, this is insane dumb to force MFA for users. It should be up to them if they want that extra blanket of security.

With Xero, there are no limits on the number of users you can invite into an organisation or client file. We suggest inviting new users instead of sharing your login credentials. Please visit Xero Central for a step by step guide and search \’add a new user to your organisation\’ so there\’s an audit trail of access and data changes. It is ridiculous to force multi-factor identification. Also, heaven forbid I chose to leave my phone at home during the work day to remove distractions and increase productivity.

This is now impossible thanks to your careless, flawed, and authoritarian implementation of MFA. This forced feature is trash.

You can change the app you use to authenticate yourself when you log in to Xero. We recommend Xero Verify for quick and easy authentication using push notifications. You can change your backup email address to another address. It needs to be different to the one you use to log in to Xero. When you set up MFA, Xero asked you to choose an authentication backup method.

Click the link to the authy. Scroll down to the desktop section and select your operating system from the options listed. Add a backup email address, then click Continue. Your answers can only contain letters or numbers, and not any symbols or special characters.

While logged in to Xero, click your initials or profile image at the top right of the screen, then select Account. They also need to be five or more characters.

You\’re now set up to use MFA next time you log into Xero. If you can\’t install apps on your work computer yourself, ask your IT team to install an authenticator app for you, either on your computer or your organisation\’s server. There are a number of authenticator apps available, such as our recommended app Authy.

Alternatively, you can use the steps below to do this. Click Set up multi-factor authentication to get started. If you\’re not yet required to set up MFA but want to get started, do this while you\’re logged in. Click your initials or profile image at the top right of the screen and select Account.

Under Additional Security , next to Multi-factor authentication , click Set up. This will take you to the start of the MFA process.

When prompted to choose an authenticator app, select Use my own app. In a separate tab on your web browser, go to the Authy website and follow the steps to download Authy to your desktop.

When you enter a phone number, you can select how you receive the verification code. Then, enter the code to get into Authy. Add Xero as an account within Authy. To find the code or key, return to Xero and click Can\’t scan the QR code? Enter a setup key instead. Next to Setup Key , click Copy.
