My problem was that I was doing German Studies, a field which has shrunk to the point of oblivion in the UK.

I did all I was supposed to, only to find that there are basically no jobs in German. Then look for yourself on jobs. No jobs also equates to career instability, since entire departments have been closing left, right, and center in the UK.
